SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) had 17 points and 17 rebounds, while senior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) added 17 points to lead Shepherd University (3-4, 2-2 MEC) to an 85-68 win over Glenville State (0-7, 0-4 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Carr hit on 6-of-14 field goals with a 2-of-4 effort from beyond the arc. He drained 3-of-4 free throws. Davis was 6-of-15 from the floor with a 5-of-13 effort from three-point range. Carr's 17-rebound effort tied a career high.
Shepherd had five players in doubles figures as junior guard Derek McKnight (Teaneck, NJ/Gaston (N.C.) Day School/Louisburg CC) had 14 points, junior forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) had 11, while senior forward Gavin McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) tossed in 10.
Brooks Ely had a game-high 20 points and a game-high four assists for the Pioneers. John Routzahn added 13 points.
The Rams outscored Glenville State, 53-37, in the second half to pull away for the win.
Shepherd had a 32-31 advantage at halftime.
Shepherd connected on 47.3 percent (27-62) from the floor with a 36 percent (9-25) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 84.6 percent (22-26) of their free throws.
Glenville State shot 41.8 percent (23-55) from the floor with a 34.6 percent effort (9-26) from three-point range. The Pioneers shot 72.2 percent (13-18) from the charity stripe.
Shepherd had a 43-27 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced seven turnovers and committed eight.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host West Liberty for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
