Shepherd Women Top Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Junior guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) scored a game-high 25 points to lead Shepherd University (12-15, 9-10 MEC) to a 71-59 win over Charleston (9-16, 8-11 MEC) in MEC women's basketball action at Charleston on Thursday.

Arden connected on 9-of-19 field goals with a 7-of-8 effort from the charity stripe. She added four rebounds, two steals, and an assist.

Senior guard Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) fired in 14 points, while junior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) had 13.

Jordyn Peck led Charleston with 16 points. Anna Hayton added 12 points, while Abby Watson tossed in 10.

Shepherd had a 31-24 lead at halftime.

The Rams used a 21-12 effort in the third period to take control of the contest. Liz Myers hit a layup with 6:00 left in the third period to give the Rams an 11-point advantage at 39-28. Shepherd maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game.

Shepherd shot 40 percent (24-60) from the floor with a 30 percent effort (3-10) from three-point range for the game. The Rams shot 76 percent (19-25) from the charity stripe.

Charleston hit on 33.3 percent (17-51) from the floor with a 21.4 percent (3-14) performance from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles connected on 91.7 percent (22-4) of their free throws.

Charleston had a 33-25 edge in rebounding. Shepherd forced 22 turnovers and committed 14.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Virginia State for a 2 p.m. game.
