Shepherd Baseball Sweeps University of Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Shepherd University (6-10, 4-0 MEC) swept a pair of games with University of Charleston (10-5, 0-2 MEC) in MEC baseball action at Charleston on Sunday afternoon. Shepherd recorded a 5-1 victory in game one and added a 12-4 triumph in the nightcap.

The Rams took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in game one on a two-run double by junior designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU).

Charleston cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-single by Taylor Itnyre.

Shepherd took a 3-1 lead in the third as junior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown) reached on an error and later scored when sophomore infielder Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) reached on an error.

The Rams added a pair of runs in the sixth. McCourt led off with a single and scored on a single by junior catcher Dalton Haymaker (New Oxford, Pa./Delone Catholic/Frederick CC). Senior second baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) added a sacrifice fly to plate freshman outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run), who reached on a single.

Haymaker went 3-for-3 and Heleine added a 2-for-4 effort to lead the Rams.

Gianfranco Morello went 3-for-4 for the Golden Eagles.

Junior pitcher Ryan Pansch (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 2 BB) (2-0) earned the win for the Rams with help from junior Dan Galati (Hockessin, Del.St. Elizabeth's) (1.0 IP, 0 H, 3 K, 0 BB). Jonathan Carr (6.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) took the loss for the Golden Eagles.

Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap as Brice Arrington led off with a double and scored when Morello grounded out to first.

Shepherd tied the game in the fourth on a solo blast by Heleine.

The Rams added a run in the fifth as Carney walked and scored on a triple off the bat of senior outfielder JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William& Mary) .

Shepherd scored a pair of runs in the sixth on a two-run homer by senior shortstop Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton East/Mercer CC).

Charleston answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame behind RBI-doubles from Nick Wilson and Jeff Somuk to make it 4-3.

Shepherd added five runs in the eighth. Doyle doubled and scored on single by Carney. Freshman catcher Joe Burack (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) singled and later scored when Farley reached on an infield error. Carney later scored when Hoffman walked with the bases loaded. Heleine added a two-run single to cap the rally.

The Rams got RBIs from Burack, Carney, and sophomore outfielder Reid Entsminger (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Lamar) in the ninth to take a 12-3 lead.

Charleston scored its final run in the ninth as Ethan Hunt reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a wild pitch.

Burack went 3-for-4 to pace a 13-hit attack for the Rams.

Arrington went 3-for-5 to lead the Golden Eagles

Senior pitcher John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (2-3) (7.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) picked up the win. Charleston starter Anthony Zona (5.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) suffered the loss.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Glenville State College for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
