SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (35-18, 21-11 MEC) swept Charleston (33-20, 22-10 MEC) in MEC softball action on Senior Day at Shepherd on Sunday. Shepherd gained a 6-5 victory in game one and added a 6-2 triumph in the nightcap. Shepherd finishes the regular season as the MEC North champions.
UC took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap behind an RBI-double from Haleigh Christopher and an RBI-single by Laura Ashlock.
Shepherd tied the game in the bottom of the frame as freshman second baseman Debbie Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) drove in a run and added another on an error.
Shepherd took a 4-2 lead in the fourth on a two-run double by by senior third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson).
Witt added a two-run single in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) went 4-for-4 and Witt added a 3-for-4 effort to pace the Rams.
Sophomore pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (9-3) gained the win for the Rams. Jessie Rowe (5.1 IP, 11 H, 6 R 4 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) (33-23) took the loss for the Golden Eagles.
Shepherd rallied with three runs in the seventh to post a come-from-behind win in game one.
Konopka scored the game-winning run when Stuart reached on a fielder's choice.
Junior outfielder Jessica Robinson (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) and sophomore first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) each had a pair of hits and drove in a run for the Rams.
Rachelle Toppings went 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs for Charleston
Senior pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va/Morgantown) (7.0 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 K 1 BB) (18-5) earned the win for the Rams. Alli Burdette (6.0 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 4 BB) (17-9) took the loss for Golden Eagles.
The Rams return to action on Friday at 2:30 p.m. when they face Concord, the third seed in the MEC South, at the MEC Tournament. The tournament will take place at the James I. Moyer Complex in Salem, Virginia.
Notes: Kaitlyn Konopka broke a pair of single-season marks for the Rams ... her 22 stolen bases eclipse the old mark of 21 set by Elizabeth Grizzell in 1994 ... Konopka's 172 at-bats this season surpass the old mark of 171 set by Konopka in 2016.
