BECKLEY, W.Va. – Shepherd University (32-22) used a 19-hit attack en route to a 13-6 win over University of Charleston (34-22) at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley in MEC Baseball Tournament action in the later game to win the tournament on Sunday. Shepherd dropped a 13-11 contest in the first game.
Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the first in the later game on an RBI-triple by Lee Carneal.
The Rams took a 3-1 lead in the third as senior infielder
Tyler Piccolo (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point/Dowling) hit an RBI-triple, while senior first baseman
Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando), and senior outfielder
JJ Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William& Mary) each had RBI-singles.
UC countered with five runs in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. Nick Wilson had a three-run double to key the rally.
The Rams plated six runs in the fifth to take a 9-6 lead. Junior designated hitter
Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) hit a three-run homer and Sarty added two-run double to fuel the rally.
Shepherd tacked on two more runs in the sixth on a two-run blast by Sarty and two more in the eighth as senior outfielder
Ron Farley (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall/Delaware Tech) had an RBI-triple and later scored on a wild pitch.
Carney Farley, Sarty and Heleine each had three hits to pace the Rams.
Sophomore pitcher
Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K, 0 BB) (4-1) gained the win for the Rams in relief. Anthony Zona (1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 K, 0 BB) (2-3) took the loss for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles used a pair of big innings and held on for a 13-11 in in game one.
Charleston scored four runs in the third with a two-run single by Davis keying the rally.
The Golden Eagles added six runs in the fourth with a three-run homer by Nick Wilson highlighting the rally.
Lee Carneal and Gianfranco Morello each had three hits to lead a 14-hit attack for the Golden Eagles.
Nine different Rams had a pair of hits to lead an 18-hit effort for the Rams. Senior second baseman
Brandon Kirk (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton East/Mercer CC), Sarty, and freshman outfielder
Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) each hit home runs for the Rams.

Joe Rindone (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick/Towson) (5-6) (3.1 IP, 4 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 3 K, 6 BB) took the loss for the Rams. Brandon Harris (5.0 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (3-0) gained the win for the Golden Eagles with Levi Nash (0.2 IP, 0 K, 0 BB) notching the save.
