Shepherd Football Falls to Fairmont State

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Khalil Hamlin rushed 27 times for 111 yards and three touchdowns to lead Fairmont State (5-2, 4-2 MEC) to a 38-17 win over Shepherd (4-2, 4-2 MEC) in MEC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.

Fairmont State took a 7-0 lead when Takwan Crews-Naylor teamed with Aquawn Vickers on a nine-yard scoring strike with 12:31 left in the first quarter.

The Fighting Falcons took a 14-0 lead when Khalik Hamlin scored on a three-yard run with 6:23 left in the first quarter.

Colin Harvath connected on a 37-yard field goal with 14:55 left in the second quarter to up the Fairmont State advantage to 17-0.

Shepherd cut the lead to 17-3 on a 30-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Hayden August-Scriven (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) with 9:32 left in the second quarter.

Redshirt-freshman running back Ty Hebron (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) scored on a 14-yard scamper with 5:33 left in the quarter to cut the lead to 17-10.

The Falcons took a 24-10 lead into the break when Hamlin raced 33 yards for a score with 45 seconds left in the half.

Michael Porter returned an interception 36 yards for a score with 10:41 left in the third quarter to give Fairmont State a 31-10 lead.

Freshman quarterback Tyson Bagent (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) fired a four-yard scoring strike to senior wide receiver Ryan Feiss (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) with 4:32 remaining in the third quarter to get Shepherd to with 31-17.

Hamlin sealed the win for the Fighting Falcons with a three-yard touchdown run with 11:13 left in the fourth quarter.

Crew-Naylor completed 12-of-14 passes for 148 yards for the Falcons. Bagent completed 23-of-39 passes for 217 yards for the Rams.

Hebron had 12 carries for 65 yards to pace the Rams.

Junior wide receiver Greg Leonard (Lusby, Md./Patuxent/Clarion) led the Shepherd receivers with five catches for 45 yards.  Feiss added five catches for 26 yards. Vickers had four receptions for 37 yards to pace the Falcons.

Fairmont State had 313 yards of total offense, while Shepherd had 273.

Sophomore defensive back Ponce DeLeon (Greenbelt, Md./Montgomery Blair) led the Rams with a game-high 15 tackles (10 solos). Trevon Shorts had eight tackles (seven solos) for Fairmont State.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Urbana for a 1 p.m. contest.
