SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) scored a game and career-high 23 points to lead Shepherd (2-0) to an 86-71 win over Shaw (0-2) in women's basketball action at the Conference Challenge at the Butcher Center on Saturday afternoon.
McLaughlin hit on 9-of-10 shots with a 3-of-3 effort from three-point range. She was 3-of-3 from the foul line. She added four assists and a pair of steals.
Senior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage/Glenville State) poured in 19 points, sophomore forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) had 14, while senior forward Liz Moormann (New Market, Md./Oakdale) added 10.
Senior guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West York Area) added another nice all-around performance with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists.
Tahniyah Sweatt had 23 points and KlinTisha Martin added 16 to lead Shaw.
Shepherd shot 47.1 percent (32-68) from the floor with a 40 percent effort (8-20) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 77.8 percent (14-18) of their free throws.
Shaw hit on 43.5 percent (27-62) from the floor with a 35.7 percent (5-14) performance from beyond the arc. The Bears connected on 70.6 percent (12-17) of their free throws.
Shepherd had a 47-28 advantage in rebounds. The Rams forced 21 turnovers and committed 20.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host California (Pa.) for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
