Shepherd Women Knock Off West Virginia State

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  Senior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage/Glenville State) scored a game-high 30 points to lead Shepherd (3-1, 1-0 MEC) to an 84-74 win over West Virginia State (1-2, 0-1 MEC) in women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.

Tibbs hit on 10-of-14 field goals with a 5-of-8 effort from three-point range. She was 5-of-6 from the foul line. She added five rebounds and three assists. Her 30 points were also a career-high effort.

Sophomore forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) added 15 points and 10 boards, while senior guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West  York Area) had 11 points, 11 assists, and seven rebounds.

Charity Spears and Anesha Harman each scored 13 points for the Yellow Jackets. Alexandra Jackson and Amari Grace each added 10 points.

Shepherd shot 55.8 percent (29-52) from the floor with a 61.1 percent effort (11-18) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 55.6 percent (15-27) of their free throws.

West Virginia State hit on 35.9 percent (23-64) from the floor with a 28.6 percent (6-21) performance from beyond the arc. The Yellow Jackets connected on 71 percent (22-31) of their free throws.

Shepherd had a 37-34 edge in rebounds. The Rams forced 11 turnovers and committed 19.

The Rams return to action on Monday when they host Charleston at 5:30 p.m.
