SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) scored career-high 32 points to lead Shepherd University (4-1, 1-1 MEC) to a 101-93 win over University of Charleston in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Monday night.
Burgess connected on 14-of-18 shots with a 4-of-5 effort from the line.
Senior guard Derek McKnight (Teaneck, NJ/Gaston (N.C.) Day School/Louisburg CC) added a career-high 26 points and a game-high eight assists. Junior guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) added 15 points, while senior guard Devin Smith Baltimore, Md./Randallstown/Richard Bland CC) tossed in 11.
Drew Rackley scored a game-high 47 points for the Golden Eagles. He connected 14-of-26 field goals with a 4-of-11 effort for beyond the arc. He was 15-of-17 from the charity stripe. Rackley's 47 points set a Butcher Center mark, surpassing the old record of 45 set by Shepherd's Duane Harris in 1999.
Seth O'Neal had 14 points and Adam Traore added 13 for the Golden Eagles.
Charleston opened the game on an 18-2 run, but Shepherd rallied to take a 38-31 lead into the break. Shepherd led by as many as 18 points in the second half, but saw the lead dwindle down to seven points at 95-88 after a layup by Rackley with 1:30 remaining. Shepherd drained 6-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Shepherd connected on 63 percent (29-46) from the floor with a 37.5 percent (6-16) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 86 percent (37-43) of their free throws.
Charleston shot 48.3 percent (28-58) from the floor with a 37.5 percent effort (8-24) from three-point range. The Golden Eagles shot 78.4 percent (29-37) from the charity stripe.
Charleston had a 27-26 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 14 turnovers and committed 16.
The Rams return to action on Nov. 28 when they host West Virginia Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m.
