SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Abi Gabauer scored 19 points and Victoria Jackson added 15 to lead West Virginia Wesleyan (1-4, 1-2 MEC) to a 62-51 win over Shepherd (3-3, 1-2 MEC) in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday night.
Senior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage/Glenville State) led the Rams with 14 points. She hit on 6-of-15 field goals with a 2-of-10 effort from three-point range.
Senior guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West York Area) added nine points and five rebounds, while sophomore forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) had game-highs of eight rebounds and three blocked shots (tied with Gabauer) to go along with five points. Senior forward Liz Moormann (New Market, Md./Oakdale) tossed in eight points.
Brittany Stawovy added 11 points and Tyra Hughes handed out a game-high eight assists for the Bobcats.
Shepherd rallied from a 15-point deficit in the fourth period to get to within three points at 53-50 after a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) with 2:37 left in the game. The Bobcats closed the game on a 9-1 run to seal the win.
Shepherd shot 27.5 percent (14-51) from the floor with an 18.2 percent effort (4-22) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 79.2 percent (19-24) of their free throws.
West Virginia Wesleyan hit on 41.1 percent (23-56) from the floor with a 23.8 percent (5-21) performance from beyond the arc. The Bobcats connected on 57.9 percent (11-19) of their free throws.
West Virginia Wesleyan had a 43-33 edge in rebounds. The Rams forced 18 turnovers and committed 20.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Glenville State for a 2 p.m. contest.
