Shepherd Men Edged by Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va.  – Darhius Nunn scored a game-high 32 points to lead Glenville State (5-2, 2-2 MEC) to a 106-101 win over Shepherd University (5-2, 2-2 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at Glenville State on Saturday.

Nunn connected on 11-of-24 shots with a 3-of-10 effort from three-point range.  He was 7-of-7 from the line. He also added a game-high 13 assists.

Junior guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) led the Rams with a career-high 29 points. He hit on 11-of-19 field goals with a 5-of-11 effort from three-point range. Lang was 2-for-2 from the line.

Senior guard Derek McKnight (Teaneck, NJ/Gaston (N.C.) Day School/Louisburg CC) added 25 points, while senior forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) added a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Devin Smith (Baltimore, Md./Randallstown/Richard Bland CC) was also in double figures with 12 points.

Davion Johnson had 20 points and Kalin Johnson added 18 for the Pioneers.

Glenville State had a 53-44 lead at halftime as Nunn (13) and Davion Johnson (16) teamed up for 29 first half points.

Shepherd rallied and led by 11 points at 77-66 after a layup by Smith with 11:38 left in the second half. The Pioneers took the lead for good at 95-94 after a pair of free throws by Phil Bledsoe with 4:55 remaining. Shepherd got to within three points at 103-99 after a three-pointer by Lang with 18 seconds left, but Glenville State sunk 4-of-4 free throws in the game's final seconds to cap the win.

Shepherd connected on 51.2 percent (42-82) from the floor with a 44 percent (11-25) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 54.5 percent (6-11) of their free throws.

Glenville State shot 47.4 percent (36-76) from the floor with a 44.1 percent effort (15-34) from three-point range. The Pioneers shot 95 percent (19-20) from the charity stripe.

Glenville State had a 46-39 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 10 turnovers and committed nine.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to West Liberty for a 7:30 p.m. game.
