Shepherd Women Downed by Shippensburg

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Ariel Jones scored a game-high 36 points to lead Shippensburg (5-5) to a 71-65 win over Shepherd (4-6) in women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.

Jones connected on 10-of-16 field goals with a 5-of-8 performance from beyond the arc. She drained 11-of-15 free throws. Jones added nine rebounds, and three assists.

Sophomore forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) led the Rams with 21 points and nine rebounds.  She hit on 10-of-18 field goals and was 1-of-1 from the line.

Senior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage/Glenville State) added 18 points, while senior guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West  York Area) posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 assists. Sophomore guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) chipped in with four points, a pair of assists and a game-high seven steals.

Aunbrielle Green had nine points, while Kryshell Gordy added seven points and nine boards for the Raiders.

Shippensburg limited Shepherd to a 25 percent (9-36) field goal percentage in the first half to take a 31-22 lead into the break.

Shepherd used a 12-0 run in the third period to take a 43-41 lead after a jumper by Tibbs with 2:37 left in the period. The Raiders held a 47-45 advantage heading into the final quarter.

The Raiders took the lead for good at 49-47 on a layup by Jones with 8:32 left in the game. Tibbs drained a three-pointer with 1:39 remaining to get the Rams to within three points at 64-61, but they would get no closer.

Shepherd shot 39.1 percent (27-69) from the floor with a 21.4 percent effort (3-14) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 57.1 percent (8-14) of their free throws.

Shippensburg hit on 41.3 percent (19-46) from the floor with a 54.5 percent (6-11) performance from beyond the arc. The Raiders connected on 75 percent (27-36) of their free throws.

Shippensburg had a 43-36 edge in rebounds. The Rams forced 22 turnovers and committed 10.

The Rams return to action on Dec. 29 when they travel to Division I Radford for an exhibition game at 2 p.m.
