Shepherd Men Edged by Holy Family in Overtime

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  –  Kharon Randolph hit a three-pointer with five seconds left in the first overtime period to lift Holy Family (5-4) to an 83-82 win over Shepherd University (6-4) in men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Monday night.

Junior guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Rams. He connected on 7-of-11 field goals with a 5-of-8 effort from three-point range.  Lang was 8-of-10 from the line.

Senior guard Devin Smith Baltimore, Md./Randallstown/Richard Bland CC) tossed in 11 points, while senior guard Derek McKnight (Teaneck, NJ/Gaston (N.C.) Day School/Louisburg CC) added 10 points and tied Lang with a game-high four assists. 

Freshman guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) contributed six points and  a team-high seven rebounds, while sophomore forward Kyle Daggett (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) scored a career-high nine points in his first career start for the Rams.

Dymir Montague scored 21 points and grabbed eight boards to lead the Tigers. Patrick Robinson added 19 points, while Randolph had 15. Eric Esposito (14 points) and Branden Aughburns (11) were also in double figures.

Shepherd had a 35-33 lead at the break as Lang (9) and Daggett (7) combined for 16 first-half points. 

The Rams led by as many as 10 points in the second half but Holy Family battled back to take a 70-69 lead after a free throw by Randolph with 3:47 left. Lang drained three free throws with 3:27 left to give Shepherd a 72-70 lead but the Tigers knotted the game on a pair of free throws by Robinson with 2:34 left. Randolph lit a layup and a free throw to give Holy Family a 75-72 advantage with 59 seconds left. McKnight drained a three-pointer with 39 seconds remaining to tie the game. Smith hit a pair of free throws for the Rams with five seconds left before Aughburn converted a layup for the Tigers before the buzzer to force the extra session.

Holy Family took an 80-77 lead after a three-pointer by Montague with 4:44 left in overtime. Lang drained a three-pointer for Shepherd with 3:20 left to tie the game. A jumper by Lang with 2:18 remaining set the stage for Randolph's game-winner.

Shepherd connected on 50 percent (23-46) from the floor with a 45.8 percent (11-24) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 69.4 percent (25-36) of their free throws.

Holy Family shot 42.9 percent (27-63) from the floor with a 29 percent effort (9-31) from three-point range. The Tigers shot 58.8 percent (20-34) from the charity stripe.

Shepherd had a 41-30 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced eight turnovers and committed 19.

The Rams return to action on Jan. 2 when they travel to Shippensburg for a 7 p.m. contest.
