SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage/Glenville State) scored 20 points and sophomore forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) added 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Shepherd (4-5, 2-4 MEC) to an 87-70 win over Wheeling Jesuit (3-7, 1-5 MEC) in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Tibbs hit on 8-of-14 field goals with a 4-of-7 effort from three point range. Clayton hit on 7-of-12 field goals with a 3-of-5 performance from the foul line.
Senior guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West York Area) was a rebound shy of a triple-double as she had 12 points, 16 assists, and nine rebounds. Lankford tied the school single-game mark for most assists in a game for the second time this season (Winston-Salem State on Nov. 10 . She shares with Liz Vaughan, who had 16 assists against Salem on Jan. 24, 1987.
Sophomore guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield)added 12 points.
Chenelle Moore led the Cardinals with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Lauren Lipscomb added 15 points, while Khira Burton tossed in 12.
Shepherd outscored Wheeling Jesuit, 34-16, in the first quarter and took a 47-36 lead into the break. The Rams maintained a double-digit lead throughout the entire second half.
Shepherd shot 47.8 percent (32-67) from the floor with a 50 percent effort (9-18) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 58.3 percent (14-24) of their free throws.
Wheeling Jesuit hit on 39.1 percent (25-67) from the floor with a 37.5 percent (9-24) performance from beyond the arc. The Cardinals connected on 61.1 percent (11-18) of their free throws.
Wheeling Jesuit had a 43-41 edge in rebounds. The Rams forced 19 turnovers and committed 11.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Shippensburg at 2 p.m.
