SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman quarterback Tyson Bagent (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) completed 32-of-41 passes for 378 yards and three touchdowns to lead Shepherd University (1-1, 1-1 MEC) to a 41-24 win over Glenville State (1-2, 1-2 MEC) in MEC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday. The win gave first-year head coach Ernie McCook his first career victory.
Shepherd took a 7-0 lead when Bagent teamed with junior wide receiver Greg Leonard (Lusby, Md./Patuxent/Clarion) on a 10-yard scoring strike with 10:03 left in the first quarter. Sophomore kicker Hayden August-Scriven (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) added the extra point.
The Rams increased their lead to 14-0 when Bagent and Leonard teamed on a 13-yard scoring strike with 4:39 left in the second quarter.
Bagent scored on a one-yard plunge with 23 seconds left in the half to give the Rams a 21-0 advantage at the break.
Bagent fired a 47-yard scoring strike to sophomore wide receiver Dylan Brewer (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) with 13:01 left in the third quarter. The extra point attempt was blocked.
Glenville State got on the scoreboard with 6:56 left in the third quarter on a 25-yard interception return by Samuel Thomas to cut the lead to 27-7.
Freshman running back Zyan Sturdivant (North Dinwiddie, Va./Dinwiddie County) scored on a 12-yard scamper with 2:05 left in the quarter to up the lead to 34-7.
Jaylen McNair fired a 75-yard scoring pass to Javon Butler with 1:56 left in the quarter to cut the lead to 34-14.
Shepherd got a 15-yard scoring run from redshirt freshman Ty Hebron (Rockville, Md/Richard Montgomery) with 12:58 left in the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 41-14.
McNair teamed with Tre Crutcher on a four-yard scoring pass to cut the deficit to 41-21 with 6:13 left in the fourth quarter.
Justin Watts connected on a 34-yard field goal with 15 seconds left in the game to complete the scoring.
McNair completed 24-of-32 passes for 369 yards for the Pioneers.
Senior wide receiver Ryan Feiss (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) had nine receptions for 113 yards, while Leonard added seven grabs for 61 yards for the Rams. Butler had four catches for 109 yards for the Pioneers.
Sturdivant rushed 19 times for game-high 86 yards for the Rams. Mario Pender had 12 carries for 49 yards for Glenville State.
Shepherd had 498 yards of total offense, while Glenville State had 319.
Sophomore linebacker Chrys Lane (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk) led the Rams with six tackles (all solos). Senior cornerback DeJuan Neal (Shady Side, Md./Southern) added five stops (four solos) and an interception. Daniel Robinson led the Pioneers with nine tackles (seven solos).
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Virginia State for a noon contest.
Notes: Bagent now has 68 completions, 896 passing yards and six touchdowns in two games … Shepherd moves to 35-25-2 in the all-time series with Glenville State … Feiss recorded his 12th career 100-yard receiving game and moved into second place (2,411 yards) on the Shepherd receiving yards list past Jason Dirting (2,372, 1998-2001).
Ryan Feiss led the Shepherd receivers with nine receptions for 113 yards.
Zyan Sturdivant rushed for a game-high 86 yards.
