INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Freshman quarterback Tyson Bagent (Martinsburg, W,Va./Martinsburg) completed 23-of-40 passes for 318 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Shepherd (2-1, 2-1 MEC) to a 27-7 win over West Virginia State (1-3, 1-3 MEC) in MEC football action at West Virginia State on Saturday.
Shepherd took a 7-0 lead when junior running back Deonte Glover (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman/WVU) scored on a one-yard plunge with 10:23 left in the first quarter. Sophomore kicker Hayden August-Scriven (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) added the extra point.
Bagent teamed with junior wide receiver Greg Leonard (Lusby, Md./Patuxent/Clarion) on a 62-yard scoring strike with 3:42 left in the first quarter to give Shepherd a 14-0 lead.
August-Scriven added field goals of 20 and 32 yards in the second quarter to give the Rams a 20-0  advantage at the break.
Bagent teamed with senior wide receiver Wanya Allen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) on a 20-yard scoring pass with 3:24 left in the third quarter to take a 27-0 lead.
Faustino Saucedo fired a 46-yard touchdown pass to Zach Pate with 2:07 left in the third quarter for West Virginia State.
Saucedo completed 16-of-24 passes for 244 yards for the Yellow Jackets.
Freshman running back Zyan Sturdivant (North Dinwiddie, Va./Dinwiddie County) had 22 carries for a game-high 110 yards for the Rams. Calil Wilkins had 19 carries for 75 yards to pace the Yellow Jackets
Leonard had four receptions for 124 yards to lead the Shepherd receivers. Allen added four catches for 96 yards, while senior wide receiver Ryan Feiss (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) had nine receptions for 53 yards. Pate had four grabs for 85 yards to lead the Yellow Jackets.
Shepherd had 528 yards of total offense, while West Virginia State had 332. Shepherd limited State to 88 rushing yards.
Sophomore linebacker Chrys Lane (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk) led the Rams with 10 tackles (three solos). Sophomore defensive back Ponce DeLeon (Greenbelt, Md./Montgomery Blair) added nine stops (one solo) and an interception. Moises Valcarcel recorded a game-high 17 tackles (five solos) for the Yellow Jackets.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Concord at noon for Homecoming.
Notes: Bagent is now 91-of-137 for 1,214 yards and eight touchdowns through three games … Shepherd improves to 39-3 in the all-time series with West Virginia State … The Rams have 38 consecutive wins over the Yellow Jackets.
