Lang Lifts Shepherd Men Past UVa-Wise

WISE, Va.  –  Junior guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) scored a game-high 36 points, including the game-winning jumper with 11 seconds remaining, to lift Shepherd University (9-5, 5-3 MEC) to an 80-79 win over UVa-Wise (5-8, 3-5 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at UVa-Wise  on Saturday.

Lang connected 13-of-17 field goals with a 9-of-13 effort from three-point range. He drained 1-of-1 free throws. Lang's 36 points are a career high and his nine three-pointers are one shy of the Shepherd single-game record (10, Steffen Davis vs. Davis & Elkins, 11-18-15).

Senior guard Derek McKnight (Teaneck, N.J./Gaston (N.C.) Day School/Louisburg CC) added 17 points, six rebounds. and four assists, while freshman guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Michal Seals scored 23 points and tied Preston for game-high rebounding honors with nine to pace the Cavaliers. Jordan added 14 points, Cameron Whiteside had 13, while Briggs Parris tossed in 10.

The game was tied at halftime, 34-34.

The contest featured 13 ties and 10 lead changes.

UVa-Wise took a 79-75 lead after a pair of free throws by Seals with 1:03 remaining. Lang drained a three-pointer with 50 seconds to cut the lead to 79-78. After Lang's jumper put the Rams ahead with 11 seconds left, sophomore guard Jarrell Jones (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg/Alderson Broaddus) rebounded a miss by Seals with two seconds remaining to cap the win.

Shepherd connected on 43.1 percent (25-58) from the floor with a 38.7 percent (12-31) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 78.3 percent (18-23) of their free throws.

UVa-Wise shot 43.2 percent (32-74) from the floor with a 16.7 percent effort (4-24) from three-point range. The Cavaliers shot 78.6 percent (11-14) from the charity stripe.

Rebounds were even at 40 apiece. The Rams forced five turnovers and committed 10.

The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m.
