Shepherd Women Rally Past UVa-Wise

WISE, Va. – Shepherd (6-8, 3-5 MEC) outscored UVa-Wise (6-8, 4-4 MEC) 20-4 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 64-53 win in MEC women's basketball action at UVa-Wise on Saturday.

Sophomore guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) led the Rams with a game-high 22 points. McLaughlin connected on 8-of-14 field goals with a 1-of-2 performance from beyond the arc. She was 5-of-9 from the foul line. McLaughlin added seven boards.

Sophomore forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) had 15 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to post her fifth double-double of the season.  She added three assists, three blocked shots, and two steals. Senior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage/Glenville State) was also in double figures with 11 points.

Kalee Johnson had 11 points and Cynita Webb added 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead UVa-Wise.

Wise had a 33-29 lead at the break behind Johnson's 11-point effort.

The Cavaliers took a 49-45 advantage into the fourth quarter. Shepherd began the final quarter on an 8-1 run as they took the lead for good at 52-50 after a layup by McLaughlin with 5:03 left. The Rams hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute and a half to seal the victory.

Shepherd shot 45.5 percent (20-44) from the floor with a 44.4 percent effort (4-9) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 57.1 percent (20-35) of their free throws.

UVa-Wise hit on 36.2 percent (21-58) from the floor with a 23.5 percent (4-17) performance from beyond the arc. The Cavaliers connected on 53.8 percent (7-13) of their free throws.

Shepherd had a 39-32 advantage in boards. The Rams forced 21 turnovers and committed 23.

The Rams return to action on Thursday when then they host Notre Dame for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
