SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West York Area) hit a layup with 2.4 seconds remaining to lift Shepherd (7-8, 4-5 MEC) to an 82-81 win over Notre Dame (8-7, 5-4 MEC) in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Thursday.
Lankford had 11 points, 11 rebounds, and seven rebounds on the night for the Rams.
Senior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage/Glenville State) led the Rams with 24 points. She hit on 7-of-16 field goals with a 5-of-9 effort from three-point range. Tibbs was 5-of-6 from the foul line.
Sophomore forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) added 21 points , while freshman guard Hannah Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) contributed 12 points and tied Notre Dame's Jessie Stout with a game-high eight rebounds.
Seina Adachi had a game-high 26 points to pace the Falcons. Ajia McIntyre added 14 points, Kylie Ramlow had 12, while Stout tossed in 11.
Shepherd had a 39-38 lead at halftime as Tibbs and Adachi each had 14 first-half points.
A close contest throughout, the game displayed seven ties and 15 lead changes.
Trailing 80-77 with just over a minute to play, the Falcons got a layup from Tamia Ridley at the 1:23 mark and a jumper by Ramlow with six seconds left to take an 81-80 lead and set the stage for Lankford's game-winner. Stout and Ridley missed shots in the game's final seconds as Shepherd held on for the win.
Shepherd shot 51.9 percent (28-54) from the floor with a 56.3 percent effort (9-16) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 68 percent (17-25) of their free throws.
Notre Dame hit on 45.8 percent (33-72) from the floor with a 38.1 percent (38.1) performance from beyond the arc. The Falcons connected on 58.3 percent (7-12) of their free throws.
Notre Dame had a 36-32 advantage in boards. The Rams forced eight turnovers and committed 11.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when then they host Urbana for a 2 p.m. contest.
