Shepherd Women Down Urbana

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) scored 22 points and senior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage/Glenville State) added 20 to lead Shepherd (8-8, 5-5 MEC) to a 78-66 win over Urbana (1-13, 1-9 MEC) in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.

Clayton hit on 10-of-18 field goals with a 2-of-4 effort from the foul line. She also grabbed  a game-high 12 rebounds to post her sixth double-double of the season.

Tibbs connected on 7-of-16 field goals with a 2-of-5 effort from beyond the arc. She was 4-for-4 from the line.

Senior guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West  York Area) and sophomore guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) each tossed in 10 points. Senior forward Liz Moormann (New Market, Md./Oakdale) grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to go along with six points.

Sylvia Hudson scored 21 points to lead Urbana. Nikki Current added 13 points, while Kami McEldowney tossed in 11.

Shepherd had a 45-35 lead at halftime as Clayton (15) and Tibbs (11) combined for 26 first-half points.

Urbana outscored Shepherd 23-19 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 64-58, but Shepherd finished the game with a 14-8 run to capture the win.

Shepherd shot 50 percent (31-62) from the floor with a 37.5 percent effort (3-8) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 72.2 percent (13-18) of their free throws.

Urbana hit on 38.1 percent (24-63) from the floor with a 22.2 percent (4-18) performance from beyond the arc. The Blue Knights connected on 100 percent (14-14) of their free throws.

Shepherd had a 40-32 advantage in boards. The Rams forced 12 turnovers and committed 12.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when then they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
