Shepherd Women Knock Off Millersville

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage/Glenville State) scored a game-high 24 points and senior guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West  York Area) added a triple-double with 16 points, 15 assists, and 12 rebounds to lead Shepherd (5-6) to an 88-71 win over Millersville (4-8) in women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday afternoon.

Tibbs connected on 8-of-14 field goals with a 6-of-10 performance from beyond the arc. She was 2-of-4 from the foul line.

Sophomore forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's)  added 17 points and three blocked shots, while sophomore guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) tossed in 16 points.

Samantha Brusha scored 17 points and Lauren Lister added 16 to lead the Marauders. Chandera Jones-Aryeh added 14 points and Olivia Mottern had 11.

Shepherd had a 49-40 lead at the break as Tibbs (14) and McLaughlin (11) combined for 25 first-half points. Lankford contributed nine points and 10 assists in the first half.

Shepherd outscored Millersville 22-11 in the third period to take a 71-51 advantage heading into the final period.  The Rams opened the fourth quarter on an 11-0 run to take their largest lead of the day at 31 points at 82-51 after freshman guard Angela DeLorenzo (Fairmont, W.Va./Fairmont Senior) hit 1-of-2 free throws with 6:59 remaining.

Shepherd shot 63.5 percent (33-52) from the floor with a 55.6 percent effort (10-18) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 80 percent (12-15) of their free throws.

Millersville hit on 43.6 percent (24-55) from the floor with a 38.9 percent (7-18) performance from beyond the arc. The Marauders connected on 51.6 percent (16-31) of their free throws.

Shepherd had a 30-29 edge in rebounds. The Rams forced 19 turnovers and committed 22.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Lincoln University for a 2 p.m. contest.

Notes: Lankford's triple-double is the first in program history … her 15 assists are one shy of the Shepherd single game mark … Lankford has had 11 assists or more in five games this season … Lankford (610) went over 600 rebounds for her career … Tibbs scored 20 points or more for the fourth time this season.
