Shepherd Women Hold Off Frostburg State

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –  Junior forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) scored 19 points and junior guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) added 17 to lead Shepherd (5-0)  to a 71-66 win over Frostburg State (0-4) in women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday night.

Clayton hit on 7-of-14 field goals with a 5-of-6 effort from the foul line. She added a team-high five rebounds and  a game-high five steals. McLaughlin hit on 6-of-14 field goals with a 1-of-6 effort from beyond the arc. She was 4-of-5 from the line.

Freshman  guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort) added 14 points, a game-high seven assists, and four steals.

Amanda Emory and Victoria Diggs each scored 13 points to lead the Bobcats. Jada Holland added 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

Shepherd had a 35-28 lead at the break as Clayton (11) and McLaughlin (9) combined for 20 first half points.

Trailing 53-51 after three quarters, Shepherd oustscored Frostburg State, 20-13, in the final period to capture the victory.

Shepherd shot 42.2 percent (27-64) from the floor with a 21.1 percent effort (4-19) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 86.7 percent (13-15) of their free throws.

Frostburg State hit on 46.9 percent (23-49) from the floor with a 40 percent effort (6-15) from three-point range for the game. The Bobcats connected on 73.7 percent (14-19) of their free throws.

Frostburg State had a 39-27 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 24 turnovers and committed nine. The Rams had 18 steals on the night.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Edinboro for a 1 p.m. contest
