EDINBORO, Pa. – Jaryn Simpson hit a three-pointer as time expired to lift Edinboro (4-0, 1-0) to a 73-72 win over Shepherd University (3-2, 0-1) in PSAC men's basketball action at Edinboro on Saturday.
Sophomore guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) led the Rams with a game-high 23 points. Preston hit on 7-of-14 field goals with a 5-of-10 effort from three-point range. He was 4-of-4 from the line. Preston also tied junior guard Jarrell Jones (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg/Alderson Broaddus) a team-high six rebounds.
Senior guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) had 15 points and Jones added 13 points and a team-high four assists. Freshman guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) was also in double figures with 10 points.
Dayton Harris had 19 points to lead Edinboro. Simpson and Trey Staunch each added 15 points, while Anthony Coleman had 10.
Shepherd had a 40-38 lead as Lang (12) and Preston (7) combined for 19 first half points.
Shepherd connected on 44.1 percent (26-59) from the floor with a 42.4 percent (14-33) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 100 percent (6-6) of their free throws.
Edinboro shot 45.8 percent (27-59) from the floor with a 40 percent effort (10-25) from three-point range. The Fighting Scots shot 81.8 percent (9-11) from the charity stripe.
Rebounds were tied at 33-all. The Rams forced 12 turnovers and committed 15.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to Mercyhurst for a 3 p.m. game.
