SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort) scored a game-high 19 points to lead Shepherd (2-0) to a 79-63 win over Virginia State (0-2) in second day action of the Conference Challenge on Saturday at the Butcher Center.
Beeman connected on 6-of-12 field goals with a 7-of-7 effort from the charity stripe. She also handed out a game-high six assists.
Freshman guard Jordan Smith (Manassas, Va./Colgan) added 15 points, while junior guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) added 12 points. Junior forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) was also in double figures with 11 points.
Autumn Hopson scored 13 points to lead the Trojans. Yazmen Hannah added 11 points.
Shepherd had a 38-33 lead at halftime behind 13 first half points from Smith.
The Rams outscored the Trojans, 22-12, in the third quarter to pull away in the second half.
Shepherd shot 50 percent (27-74) from the floor with a 46.7 percent effort (7-15) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 78.3 percent (18-23) of their free throws.
Virginia State hit on 35.1 percent (26-54) from the floor with a 15.4 percent effort (2-13) from three-point range for the game. The Trojans connected on 90 percent (9-10) of their free throws.
Virginia State had a 46-33 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 15 turnovers and committed 14.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host Lincoln for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
