McLaughlin Lifts Shepherd Women Past Alderson Broaddus

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  –  Junior guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) hit a layup with 1.3 seconds remaining to lift Shepherd (7-1)  to a 62-61 win over Alderson-Broaddus (1-4)  in women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Monday evening.

McLaughlin had a game-high 23 points for the Rams. She hit on 10-of-18 field goals with a 1-of-4 effort from three-point range. She was 2-of-4 from the foul line.

Junior forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) added 14 points. Sophomore guard Hannah Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) had seven points, three assists, and three steals. Freshman  guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort) contributed  a game-high six assists, and tied Hannah Henderson of Alderson Broaddus with a game-high six rebounds.

Jeana Weatherspoon had 18 points to lead the Battlers. Shay Harper added 13 points, while Kristy Galea tossed in nine.

Shepherd trailed by six points at 61-55 after a layup by Galea with 2:13 left in regulation. Sophomore guard Madi White (Hamilton, Va./Woodgrove) drained a three-pointer with 1:18 left to cut the lead to 61-58. Beeman hit 1-of-2 free throws with a minute remaining to make it 61-59.

McLaughlin hit 1-of-2 free throws with 12 seconds left to get the Rams within a point, but Clayton secured the rebound off the miss to set the stage for McLaughlin's game-winner.

Shepherd shot 54.2 percent (26-48) from the floor with a 36.4 percent effort (4-11) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 54.5 percent (6-11) of their free throws.

Alderson Broaddus hit on 45.8 percent (22-48) from the floor with a 33.3 percent effort (6-18) from three-point range for the game. The Battlers connected on 78.6 percent (11-14) of their free throws.

Alderson Broaddus had a 27-24 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 23 turnovers and committed 22. Each team had 11 steals.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Slippery Rock for a 1 p.m. contest.
