SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) scored a game and career-high 35 points to lift Shepherd (8-1, 2-1) to an 89-86 win over Slippery Rock (2-6, 0-3) in PSAC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday afternoon
McLaughlin hit on 12-of-19 field goals with a 3-of-7 effort from three-point range. She was 8-of-9 from the foul line.
Freshman guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort) added 28 points, five assists, and three steals. Junior forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) posted her second double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Clayton added a game-high three blocked shots.
Brooke Hinderliter scored 25 points to pace The Rock. Madison Johnson and Daeja Quick each added 24.
Shepherd led by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter, but Slippery Rock battled back to take an 86-85 advantage after Quick hit a jumper with nine seconds left. McLaughlin was fouled with two seconds remaining and calmly sank a pair of free throws to give the Rams an 87-86 lead. After Slippery Rock turned the ball over, Beeman sunk two more foul shots to seal the win.
Shepherd shot 53.1 percent (34-64) from the floor with a 35 percent effort (7-20) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 82.4 percent (14-17) of their free throws.
Slippery Rock hit on 46 percent (29-63) from the floor with a 42.9 percent effort (9-21) from three-point range for the game. The Rock connected on 82.6 percent (19-23) of their free throws.
Slippery Rock had a 37-30 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 20 turnovers and committed 17. Shepherd recorded 12 steals, while Slippery Rock had 10.
The Rams return to action on Dec. 20 when they host Indiana (Pa.) at 5:30 p.m.
