Concord Edges Shepherd Men

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –  Tommy Bolte scored 24 of his game-high 31 points in the second half to lead Concord (18-5, 13-4) to a 77-76 win over Shepherd University (11-12, 7-10 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Thursday night. Bolte scored the game-winning layup with 16 seconds left in the game.

Bolte hit on 12-of-25 field goals with a 2-of-5 performance from three-point range. He sank 5-of-6 free throws. He added six rebounds and three assists.

Junior guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) scored 20 points to lead the Rams. Senior forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) added 17 points and  a game-high 10 rebounds to post his third double-double of the season. Freshman guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) added 13 points and four assists, while sophomore guard Cam Stephens (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) had nine points and a game-high five assists.

Jair Rodgers added 18 points for the Mountain Lions. Trey Brisco tossed in 10 points.

Shepherd had a 40-38 lead at halftime.

The Rams took a 75-74 lead late in the contest after sophomore guard Jarrell Jones (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg/Alderson Broaddus) drained a three-pointer with 1:13 remaining.  Jafar Musa hit one of two free throws for Concord to tie the game at 75-all with 1:01 seconds left. Burgess hit one of two free throws with 42 seconds left to give the Rams a 76-75 advantage. After Bolte put the Mountain Lions ahead, Musa blocked at last-second shot by Burgess to preserve the Concord win.

Shepherd connected on 52.8 percent (28-53) from the floor with a 50 percent (11-22) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 81.8 percent (9-11) of their free throws.

Concord shot 48.3 percent (28-58) from the floor with a 33.3 percent effort (6-18) from three-point range. The Mountain Lions shot 88.2 percent (15-17) from the charity stripe.

Concord had a 29-28 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced five turnovers and committed 11.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host UVa-Wise at 4 p.m.
