BALTIMORE, Md. – Shepherd University (2-7) used an 18-hit attack en route to a 17-4 win over Tiffin University (1-2) in baseball action at McManus Field in Carla Crispino Baseball Stadium at Calvert Hall College High School on Saturday afternoon.
Clinging to a 2-1 lead, Shepherd scored five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-1 advantage. Junior catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) and sophomore designated hitter Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) each had RBI-doubles, while senior shortstop Giovanni Torres (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) added a two-run single to key the rally.
After adding two runs in the fourth, Shepherd tacked on six runs in the sixth. Junior outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) hit a two-run double to highlight the scoring outburst.
Doyle went 4-for-4 with four runs scored to pace the Rams. Junior pitcher Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) added three hits, drove in three runs, and scored two more.
Brayden Callihan and Zach Campbell each had three hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Dragons.
Junior pitcher Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James School/UMBC) (6.2 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (1-1) earned the win for the Rams. Tiffin starter Aaron George (1.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on March 2 when they host Southern New Hampshire for a noon doubleheader.
