SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (4-7) swept Davis & Elkins (0-10) in doubleheader baseball action at Fairfax Field on Friday. The Rams recorded a 5-2 win in game one and added a 7-0 triumph in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one on a solo blast off the bat of junior outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run).
The Rams added a pair of runs on one hit and a pair of errors in the second to up the lead to 3-0.
The Senators cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth when Anthony Lane belted a two-run homer.
The Rams added a run in the fifth when junior third baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC) singled and later scored on junior designated hitter Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown).
Shepherd completed the scoring in the sixth when Doyle reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double off the bat of junior catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy).
Graduate student outfielder Syeed Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel/Norfolk State) paced the Rams with a pair of hits.
Chase Degrood went 3-for-4 to lead the Senators.
Junior pitcher Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James School/UMBC) (7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 3 BB) (2-1) earned the win for the Rams. Davis and Elkins starter Brandon Plummer (2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (0-2) took the loss.
Senior starter Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (7.0 IP, 2 H, 9 K, 3 BB) (1-2) tossed a two-hit shutout in the nightcap for his first win of the season. Senator starter Max Larimore (4.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 K, 5 BB) (0-4) took the loss.
Sophomore outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs to lead the Rams in game two. Junior first baseman Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) added a solo homer.
The two teams return to action on Saturday for a noon doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
