SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (10-7, 2-0 MEC) swept West Virginia Wesleyan (7-11, 0-2 MEC) in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Rams recorded a 4-1 win in game one and added a 9-1 victory in the nightcap.
West Virginia Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the second as Antonia Vega reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Skinner.
Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame behind RBI-singles from graduate student infielder Syeed Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel/Norfolk State) and junior shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook).
Shepherd took a 3-1 lead in the third as junior outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) led off with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly from junior first baseman Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC).
The Rams added a run in the fifth as junior catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) tripled and later scored on a single off the bat of senior designated hitter Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's/Catonsville CC).
Nottingham and Burgreen each had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Antonio Vega went 2-for-3 to lead the Bobcats.
Junior pitcher Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James School/UMBC) (7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) (3-1) earned the win for the Rams. Wesleyan starter Jake Bishop (4.2 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (2-3) took the loss.
Sophomore outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of doubles to pace the Rams in the nightcap.
Mahdi added 2-for-3 effort with a three-run blast in the in fourth, while Hamel added a 2-for-2 effort with a pair of runs scored.
Vega went 2-for-3 to lead Wesleyan.
Senior starter Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 9 K, 1 BB) (2-2) earned the complete game win for the Rams. Griffin Roe (4.0 IP, 8 H, 9 ER, 7 K, 4 BB) (1-3) took the loss for the Bobcats.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host Glenville State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
