BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Shepherd University split a pair of games in MEC softball action at West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. West Virginia Wesleyan (6-8, 1-1 MEC) gained a 2-1 win in game one, while Shepherd (7-5, 1-1 MEC) won the nightcap with a 3-1 triumph.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second in the nightcap as sophomore second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) led off with a triple and scored on an infield single by senior outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax).
The Rams took a 2-0 advantage in the third as senior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland).
Gilligan gave the Rams a 3-0 lead when she singled home freshman third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville), who led off the inning with a single.
Wesleyan got a solo blast from Kiley Turner with two outs in the seventh to break up a no-hit bid by junior pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham).
Stocks (7.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 10 K, 1 BB) (2-1) earned the win with the one-hitter for the Rams. Haylee Shires (7.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (2-4) took the loss.
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as Kennedy Cowart reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on an RBI-single by Turner.
Wesleyan increased its lead to 2-0 with a run in the third. Cowart led off with a double and was replaced by pinch-runner Lauryn King. King later scored on an infield single by Megan Magsamen.
Shepherd scored in the fourth as senior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) reached on an error and scored on a single off the bat of sophomore shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills).
Senior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.
Magsamen went 2-for-3 to pace the Bobcats.
Sturgill (6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (2-2) took the loss in game one. Hannah Hudson (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (3-2) gained the win for the Bobcats.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to Glenville State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
