GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Shepherd University (9-5, 3-1 MEC) swept a pair of games from Glenville State (5-11, 1-3 MEC) in MEC softball action at Glenville State on Sunday. The Rams gained a 7-1 win in game one and posted an 11-0 victory in six innings in the nightcap behind a no-hit effort by junior pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham).
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one on an RBI-single by senior catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier).
The Rams added five runs in the sixth with a three-run double by sophomore shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills) keying the rally.
The Pioneers got on the board in the sixth as Jeri Potter reached on a walk and scored on a bunt by Kassidy Heavner.
Shepherd completed the scoring in the seventh on an RBI double off the bat of senior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland).
Senior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee), senior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee), and Taylor each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Paranda Uber had two hits for the Pioneers.
Sturgill (7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 9 K, 1 BB) (3-2) gained the win in game one. Tori Ward (5.1 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (2-2) took the loss for the Pioneers.
The Rams used a 16-hit attack en route to the nightcap win.
Shepherd took a 6-0 lead in the fourth in the nightcap. Stocks belted a two-run homer, freshman third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) added a two-run single, and Gilligan had a solo blast to key the rally.
The Rams added five runs in the sixth with a two-run homer by freshman pinch-hitter Lindsey Anderson (Winchester, Va./James Wood) and a two-run single by senior outfielder Morgan Cox (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) highlighting the rally.
Konopka went 4-for-5 to pace the Rams.
Stocks (3-1) fanned 11 and walked one in her no-hit performance. Celina Maberto (3.1 IP, 10 H, 5 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) (2-6) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Bloomsburg for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
