Shepherd Softball Sweeps Bloomsburg

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (11-5) swept Bloomsburg (4-9) in softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Wednesday. The Rams gained a 6-0 win in game one and posted a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. Senior catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) led off with a single and senior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) reached on an error. The pair scored when sophomore second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) reached on an error. Brown later scored on a single off the bat of  junior designated player Kayla Wilt (Hydman, Pa. Hydman/Potomac State).

The Rams added three more runs in the fifth behind an RBI-triple by Taylor and a two-run single from Brown.

Senior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and Brown each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Senior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (7.0 IP, 3 H, 7 K, 2 BB) (4-2) gained the complete game shutout win in game one. Abby Wild (4.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (4-2) took the loss for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning in the nightcap on a solo blast by Kalynn Wheeland.

Shepherd answered back in the bottom of the fifth with three runs. A two-run single by Gilligan keyed the rally.

The Huskies added a run in the sixth as Danielle Barnes led off with a single and later scored on a ground out by Kelsey Impink.

Konopka went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams.

Junior pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (4-1) earned the win for the Rams. Sophomore pitcher Cheyenne Van Pelt (South Riding, Va./Freedom) (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 K, 0 BB) tossed hitless ball for the final two innings to gain the save. Tara Baney (5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 5 K, 3 BB) (0-7) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Urbana for a noon doubleheader.
