Shepherd Baseball Splits with West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Shepherd University (15-9, 6-2 MEC) split with West Virginia State (8-12, 6-2 MEC) in MEC baseball doubleheader action at West Virginia State on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets posted a 3-2 win in game one, while the Rams had 19 hits in the nightcap en route to a 19-2 win.

Junior first baseman Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) went 3-for-4 with six RBI and three runs scored, while sophomore designated hitter Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) added a 4-for-4 effort with two RBI and three runs scored to pace the Rams in the nightcap victory. Smith had a pair of solo blasts.

Shepherd also got multiple-hit efforts from by junior outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) (3-for-5, 1 RBI, 3 runs), sophomore outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) (2-for-5, 3 RBI, 2 runs), senior catcher Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's/Catonsville CC) (3-for-5, 1 RBI, 3 runs), and senior second baseman Giovanni Torres (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) (2-for-5, 3 RBI, 2 runs). Carr belted a three-run homer in the sixth.

Junior pitcher Steve Bowley (Medford, N.J./Holy Cross Academy/Cumberland County) (6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 4 BB) (4-2) earned the win for the Rams. Yellow Jacket starter Andrew Stone (2.1 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, 0 K, 0 BB) (1-3) took the loss.

Shepherd took a 2-0 leading the first inning in game one on a two-run homer by Doyle.

West Virginia State cut the lead to 2-1 in the third when Stone walked with the bases loaded to plate Connor Slagill.

The Yellow Jackets plated two runs on two hits in the fourth to rally for the win.

Slagill went 3-for-3 to lead State.

Sophomore pitcher Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (6.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (2-4) took the loss for the Rams. Hunter Bradley (7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) (2-1) gained the win.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Concord for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
