SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (17-9, 8-2 MEC) swept Concord (12-7, 5-5 MEC) in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Friday. The Rams posted a 7-0 win in game one and rallied for a 6-4 victory in the nightcap.
The Rams took a 3-0 lead in the third inning behind RBI-singles by junior outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) and senior first baseman Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's/Catonsville CC) and a sacrifice fly off the bat of graduate student infielder Syeed Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel/Norfolk State).
Shepherd added four runs in the fifth on a three-run blast by Mahdi and an RBI-single from senior infielder Giovanni Torres (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township).
Sophomore outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School), Nottingham, Torres, and Mahdi each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Junior pitcher Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James School/UMBC) (7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 6 K, 5 BB) (4-1) earned the win for the Rams. Concord starter Logan Morrison (4.2 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) (3-2) took the loss.
The Mountain Lions took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap on a sacrifice fly by Brett Simmons.
Concord added two runs in the second on three hits and two errors to a take a 3-0 lead.
The Rams got on the board in the fourth on a two-run homer by junior outfielder Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) to cut the lead to 3-2.
An RBI-double by Evan Webb in the bottom of the fourth upped the Concord lead to 4-2.
Shepherd took a 5-4 lead with three runs in the fifth. Junior shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Carr added an RBI-double, while Smith followed with a sacrifice fly.
The Rams added an insurance run in the sixth on a solo homer by Mahdi.
Carr went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams.
Anthony Stehlin went 3-for-4 for the Mountain Lions.
Senior starter Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (7.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 7 K, 1 BB) (3-2) earned the complete game win for the Rams. Sidney Willis (0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host UVa-Wise for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
