SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (19-9, 10-2 MEC) swept UVa-Wise (14-15, 8-4 MEC) in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Rams posted a 9-3 win in game one and rallied for a 6-4 victory in the nightcap.
Trailing 2-0 in the first inning in game one, Shepherd scored six runs in the bottom of the frame. Graduate student infielder Syeed Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel/Norfolk State) belted a three-run homer to highlight the scoring outburst.
Ethan Fletcher belted a solo homer for the Cavaliers in the second to cut the lead to 6-3.
Shepherd added a run in the fourth on an RBI-single by junior catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) and two more in the sixth on a two-run blast by junior outfielder Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC).
Junior pitcher Steve Bowley (Medford, N.J./Holy Cross Academy/Cumberland County) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) (5-1) earned the win for the Rams. Cavalier starter RJ Vanvickle (5.0 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (3-3) took the loss.
UVa-Wise took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap on an RBI-ground out by Brett Yates.
The Cavaliers added two more runs in the second with an RBI-single by Bret Roberts keying the rally.
Shepherd cut the lead to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the third. Doyle belted a solo blast and Mahdi added an RBI-single.
Wise added a run in the fourth when Cal Bailey doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.
Shepherd scored four runs in the fifth to capture the win. Senior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) belted a two-run blast, sophomore designated hitter Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) had an RBI-double, and Doyle followed with an RBI-single to highlight the rally.
Keer and Doyle had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Roberts went 3-for-4 for Wise.
Sophomore pitcher Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (3-2) gained for the Rams. Junior reliever Ryan Marketell (Webster, N.Y./Webster/Monroe CC) (1.0 IP, 1 H, ) R, 0 K, 0 BB) recorded the save. Fletcher (1.0 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Urbana for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
