Shepherd Softball Sweeps Wheeling Jesuit

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (19-5, 9-1 MEC) swept Wheeling Jesuit (6-22, 3-7 MEC) in MEC softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Saturday. The Rams gained a 5-1 win in game one and added a 5-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one behind an RBI-double by senior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) and a two-run single by senior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland).

The Rams added two runs in the third on a two-run triple by sophomore second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier).

Wheeling Jesuit got on the board in the seventh on an RBI-single by Alaina York.

Brown and Gilligan each had a pair of hits for Shepherd.

Sturgill (7.0 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (6-2) gained the win for the Rams. Madison Macy (2.1 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (1-9) took the loss for the Cardinals.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap on a two-run double by Brown.

The Rams added three runs in the fourth on a two-run single by junior pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham) and an RBI-ground out by freshman third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville).

The Cardinals plated a pair of runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Courtney Rogers and an RBI-single by Brianna Grimes.

Purtell and Brown each had three hits to lead the Rams.

Rogers went 2-for-3 for the Cardinals.

Stocks (4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 6 K, 0 BB) (8-1) earned the win for the Rams. Sturgill (1.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 K, 0 BB) picked up the save. Erin Unterbrink (4.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (1-7) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host West Liberty for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
