Shepherd Softball Runs Win Streak to Fifteen Games; Konopka Sets Hits Mark

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (21-5, 11-1 MEC) swept West Liberty (6-22, 3-7 MEC) in MEC softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Sunday. The Rams gained a 3-2 win in game one and added a 2-1 victory in eight innings in the nightcap. Senior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) went 2-for-3 in game one to reach 220 hits for her career and become the program's all-time leader. She breaks the old mark of 219 set by Mia Zappacosta (2004-07).

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as freshman third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) singled and later scored when senior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) reached on a fielder's choice.

West Liberty took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on back-to-back RBI-doubles from Sydney Bennington and Katie Beeman.

Shepherd rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to gain the win on a two-run double by sophomore shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills).

Junior pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham) (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 10 K, 1 BB) (9-1) earned the win for the Rams. Riley Bennington (6.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 K, 4 BB) (4-5) took the loss.

West Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap on an RBI-single by Beeman in the fourth.

Shepherd tied the game in the fifth on a solo blast off the bat of Burger.

The Rams claimed the win in the eighth. Purtell reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a single by Gilligan.

Gilligan went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.

Beeman went 2-for-3 for the Hilltoppers.

Senior pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) (8.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 0 BB) (7-2) earned the win. Anna Paterson (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 UER, 0 K, 0 BB) (4-2) took the loss for the Hilltoppers.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Fairmont State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
