CLERMONT, Fla. – Shepherd University opened its softball season at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida on Saturday. The Rams recorded a 4-1 win over Merrimack in the early game and dropped a 5-4 decision to Quincy in a later contest.
Merrimack took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against the Rams when Nicole Nanof singled, stole second and third, and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Luciellia Colarusso.
Shepherd tied the game in the second as senior catcher Rachel Taylor (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) reached on a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).
The Rams tacked on three runs in the third behind RBI-singles from Taylor and junior outfielder Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) and a sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Connor Gilligan (Medford, N.J. Shawnee) to rally for the win.
Senior designated player/pitcher Lori Sturgill (Waldorf, Md./McDonough/College of Southern Maryland) and Taylor led the Rams with two hits each.
Sturgill (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 K, 1 BB) (1-0) picked up the win in relief in game one. Melanie Dealmeida (3.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (1-1) took the loss for the Warriors.
Quincy took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run blast by Remi Ferguson.
Sophomore shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills) singled home Baker in the second to cut the lead to 2-1.
Sophomore second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) singled home Konopka in the third to tie the game.
Ferguson added a two-run single for Quincy in the fifth and later scored on a single by Kylie Powers to give the Hawks a 5-2 lead.
Shepherd got a two-run homer by GIlligan in the bottom of the fifth to complete the scoring.
Baker went 3-for-4 to pace the Rams.
Ferguson and Courtney Kernich each had a pair of hits for the Hawks.
Junior pitcher Taylor Stocks (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman/Fordham) (5.0 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 7 K, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Rams. Mac Kenzie Collier (3.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (2-2) got the win for Quincy. AlexDeVaney (0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 K, 0 BB) gained the save.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they face Winona State at 2 p.m. and Southern Connecticut State at 4:15 p.m.
