SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Sophomore attacker Sidney Kelly (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) and freshman midfielder Katherine Campbell (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill) each scored four goals to lead Shepherd (10-5, 7-2 MEC) to a 17-15 win over UVa-Wise (9-6, 7-1 MEC) in MEC women's lacrosse action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.
Campbell added an assist as her four goals and five points were career-high efforts.
Junior midfielder Mallory Davila (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and freshman defender/midfielder Paige Alexander (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) each netted three goals. Alexander added five draw controls, including three in the game's final five minutes.
Junior attacker/midfielder Lillian Funke (Hagerstown, Md./Boonsboro) had a goal and a career-high five assists. She added seven draw controls, six ground balls, and four caused turnovers. Funke's goal was her 63rd of the season as she broke the Shepherd single season scoring mark of 62 set by Nicole Ruane in 2012. Funke's 86 points on the year tie the Shepherd single season mark set by Georgia Karr in 2014.
Sophomore attacker Regan Brown (Reisterstown, Md./Manchester Valley) had a goal and an assist, while freshman defender Madeline Soper (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) netted a goal and freshman midfield Kira Barth (Sykesville, Md./Century) contributed an assist.
McKayla Grasham scored seven goals and added eight draw controls for UVa-Wise. Ashley Wells, Sydney Steinberg, and Kristin Gobbi each added a pair of goals.
UVa-Wise opened the game on a 5-1 run and took an 8-6 lead into halftime. Grasham had three first-half tallies.
The game featured five ties and six lead changes.
Shepherd took the lead for good at 13-12 when Alexander scored on a pass from Campbell with 7:01 remaining. Campbell followed with a pair of goals before Grasham scored with 5:34 left to cut the lead to 15-13. Kelly then scored for Shepherd before Grasham added two more goals to cut the lead to 16-15 with 2:38 left. Kelly scored an insurance goal for the Rams with 1:17 remaining.
UVa-Wise had a 34-30 edge in shots, while draw controls were even at 17-all. Shepherd had a 25-18 edge in ground balls. Both teams were 17-of-21 in clears.
Freshman goalkeeper Hailey Bennett (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) recorded 11 saves for the Rams. Elisa Giraldo posted 10 saves for the Cavaliers.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host Kutztown for a 3 p.m. contest.
