SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Lauren Schmidt had four goals and an assist to lead Kutztown (7-8) to an 18-7 win over Shepherd (10-6) in women's lacrosse action at Ram Stadium on Thursday.
Sophomore attacker Sidney Kelly (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) had two goals and an assist to lead Shepherd.
Junior midfielder Mallory Davila (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and freshman midfielder Kira Barth (Sykesville, Md./Century) each added a goal and an assist. Junior attacker/midfielder Lillian Funke (Hagerstown, Md./Boonsboro), sophomore attacker Regan Brown (Reisterstown, Md./Manchester Valley), and freshman midfielder Katherine Campbell (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill) each netted a goal. Funke added a team-high five draw controls.
Erin Vaughan Ware added two goals and three assists for Kutztown. Devon Fitzpatrick and Emily Smith each added a pair of goals.
Kutztown scored the final seven goals of the first half to take an 11-4 lead into the break.
Kutztown had a 38-18 edge in shots, and a 15-10 advantage in draw controls. The Golden Bears had a 22-13 edge in ground balls. Shepherd was 13-of-22 in clears, while Kutztown was 13-of-14.
Freshman goalkeepers Hailey Bennett (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) (8) and Jordan Hardesty (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) (3) combined for 11 saves for the Rams. Ellie Sorrentino posted three saves for the Golden Bears.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. contest in the regular season finale.
Notes: The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Rams … Funke's 87 points on the year break the previous Shepherd single season mark set of 86 set by Georgia Karr in 2014 … Kutztown's 18 goals are the most given up by the Rams this season.
