Shepherd Baseball Sweeps Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Shepherd University (32-14, 22-6 MEC) rapped 31 hits on the day en route to a sweep of Fairmont State (25-21, 16-14 MEC) in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Fairmont State on Thursday. The Rams gained a 6-3 win in game one and added a 23-0 triumph in the nightcap.

Junior outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored to lead the Rams in game one. He belted solo homers in the third and seventh innings.

Junior outfielder Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC) went 2-for-4 with a two-run double, while graduate student third baseman Syeed Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel/Norfolk State) added a solo homer.

Tyler Skidmore hit a three-run blast to pace the Fighting Falcons.

Junior pitcher Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James School/UMBC) (7.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 6 K, 2 BB) (7-2) earned the complete game win for the Rams. Michael Stout (7.0 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 9 K, 0 BB) (7-2) took the loss.

The Rams belted 21 hits and smacked six home runs in the nightcap win.

Sophomore outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School), junior shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook),  senior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU), and junior Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC) each had three hits for the Rams.

Senior catcher Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's/Catonsville CC) hit a pair of round-trippers, while Carr, Doyle, Stewart, and Atkinson each belted one.

Zach Musgrove and Tyler Hill each singled for Fairmont State.

Senior starter Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (4.0 IP, 9 K, 3 BB) (7-3) tossed hitless ball over four innings to gain the win for the Rams. Sam Aloi (2.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (3-6) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Fairmont State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader for Senior Day. The games were moved up from Sunday due to weather concerns.
