Shepherd Men Knock Off East Stroudsburg

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  – Junior guard Jarrell Jones (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg/Alderson Broaddus) scored a game and career-high 29 points to lift Shepherd University (7-9, 3-7) to an 82-78 win over East Stroudsburg (8-7, 4-6) in PSAC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday night.

Jones connected on 10-of-14 field goals with a 6-of-8 performance from beyond the arc. He was 3-of-4 from the foul line.

Sophomore guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) added 17 points and five boards, while freshman guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) tossed 16 points. Junior forward Kyle Daggett (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) contributed eight points, a team-high six rebounds, and a game and career-high four blocked shots.

Zach Sabol had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead the Warriors.  Troy Jones added 12 points and three assists.

Shepherd had a 33-29 lead at the half as McClain-Corley (12) and Preston (9) combined for 21 first-half points.

The Rams led throughout most of the second half, but East Stroudsburg rallied to take a 67-66 lead on a layup by Michal Weiss with 4:06 remaining. Shepherd got a three-pointer by Jones with 3:35 left to take a 69-67 advantage before Justin Paz hit a layup to tie the game with 3:01 remaining.

The Rams hit 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Shepherd connected on 48.1 percent (25-52) from the floor with a 48.3 percent (14-29) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 78.3 percent (18-23) of their free throws.

East Stroudsburg shot 46.2 percent (30-65) from the floor with a 33.3 percent effort (7-21) from three-point range. The Warriors shot 91.7 percent (11-12) from the foul line.

East Stroudsburg had a 35-29 rebounding advantage. Shepherd forced eight turnovers and committed nine.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Millersville for a 3 p.m. contest.
