Shepherd Men Edged by Mansfield

MILLERSVILLE, Pa.  – Mansfield (5-12, 4-8) held off Shepherd University (8-10, 4-8) for a 62-61 win in PSAC men's basketball action at Mansfield on Wednesday night.

Senior guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Rams. He hit on 5-of-9 field goals with a 4-of-6 effort from three-point range. He drained 2-of-3 free throws.

Junior forward Kyle Daggett (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) added 13 points, while Freshman guard Phillip Jordan (Rockville, Md./St. Albans) contributed 10  points, seven rebounds  and tied sophomore guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) with a team-high five assists.  Preston added six points and six boards.

Jaz Farrell had 12 points and Christian Simmons added 10 to lead the Mounties.  Trevor English added seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Mansfield had a 31-23 lead at the half.

The game featured five lead changes in the last 2:46. The Mounties took the lead for good at 59-58 on a layup by Farrell with 23 seconds left. Mike Rell hit 1-of-2 free throws with eight seconds left to up the lead to 60-58. Shepherd then turned the ball over and Simmons got a steal and  layup to give the Mounties a four-point lead before Lang hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer.

Shepherd connected on 40.7 percent (24-59) from the floor with a 37.5 percent (9-24) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 50 percent (4-8) of their free throws.

Mansfield shot 43.4 percent (23-53) from the floor with a 15.4 percent effort (2-13) from three-point range. The Mounties shot 63.6 percent (12-22) from the foul line.

Mansfield had a 38-35 edge in rebounding. Shepherd forced seven turnovers and committed 10.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Kutztown for a 3 p.m. contest.
