MANSFIELD, Pa. –Junior forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) recorded game highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead Shepherd (12-5, 6-5) to a 67-59 win over Mansfield (3-15, 1-11) in PSAC women's basketball action at Mansfield on Wednesday night.
Clayton connected on 9-of-13 field goals and was 4-of-7 from the foul line. Clayton's double-double was her seventh of the season.
Freshman guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort) added 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists. while junior guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) added 15 points and a game-high seven steals.
Paige Whitfield had 14 points, seven rebounds, and six assists for the Mounties. Jasmine Hilton added 14 points, while Kira Merritt tossed in eight points and dished out six assists.
Mansfield had a 39-29 lead at the break.
The Rams cut a 13-point Mansfield lead with a 14-2 run in the third quarter to lessen the lead to 49-48. Shepherd took the lead for good at 50-49 on a layup by Beeman with 9:49 left in the game.
Shepherd shot 45.8 percent (27-59) from the floor with a 21.4 percent effort (3-14) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 50 percent (10-20) of their free throws.
Mansfield hit on 39.7 percent (25-63) from the floor with a 30.8 percent effort (8-26) from three-point range for the game. The Mounties connected on 33.3 percent (1-3) of their free throws.
Shepherd had a 40-36 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 23 turnovers and committed 19.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Kutztown for a 1 p.m. contest.
