SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) scored a game-high 20 points to lead Shepherd (14-5, 8-5) to a 70-62 win over Kutztown (11-8, 8-5) in PSAC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday afternoon.
Clayton connected on 10-of-14 field goals and was 0-of-1 from the foul line. She added a team-high eight rebounds and a game-high three blocked shots.
Junior guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) added 16 points, while freshman guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort) contributed 14 points, a game and career-high 13 assists, and seven boards. Beeman recorded the second double-double of her career.
Rylee Derr had 19 points to pace the Golden Bears. Zoe Zerman had 11 points, while Brianna Tarabrocchia tossed in 10. Casey Remolde had eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Kutztown had a 27-25 lead at the half behind 10 first-half points from Derr.
Shepherd took the lead for good at 34-32 on a layup by Clayton with 6:27 left in the third quarter.
Shepherd shot 50.9 percent (27-53) from the floor with a 40 percent effort (6-15) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 71.4 percent (10-14) of their free throws.
Kutztown connected on 32.2 percent (19-59) from the floor with a 36 percent effort (9-25) from three-point range for the game. The Golden Bears connected on 75 percent (15-20) of their free throws.
Rebounds were even at 36-all. The Rams forced 17 turnovers and committed 15.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Shippensburg for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
Notes: Shepherd improved to 8-3 in games at the Butcher Center this season … Beeman played all 40 minutes for the 10th time this season … Clayton scored 20 points or more for the sixth time this season … the Rams improved to 7-1 in Saturday games this year.
