Shepherd Women Sink Shippensburg

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  – Junior guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) scored a game-high 28 points to lead Shepherd (15-5, 9-5) to a 78-71 win over Shippensburg (13-7, 10-4) in PSAC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday night.

McLaughlin connected on 19-of-23 field goals and was 5-of-11 from beyond the arc. She hit 5-of-10 free throws. McLaughlin added five boards and a game-high six steals.

Freshman guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort) added 19 points and 10 rebounds to post her second consecutive double-double. Junior forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) scored 16 points in limited action due to foul trouble.

Destiny Jefferson had 18 points to pace the  Raiders. Aunbrielle Green and Kryshell Gordy each had 13 points, while Ariel Jones added 12 points and a team-high four assists.

Shippensburg had a 43-31 lead at halftime as Gordy (11) and Jefferson (9) combined for 20 first-half points.

Shepherd outscored Shippensburg 20-12 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 55-51. The Rams took the lead for good at 65-63 on a three-pointer by McLaughlin with 4:21 remaining in the game.

Shepherd shot 38.9 percent (28-72) from the floor with a 23.1 percent effort (6-26) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 66.7 percent (16-24) of their free throws.

Shippensburg connected on 43.5 percent (27-62) from the floor with a 16.7 percent effort (2-12) from three-point range for the game. The Raiders connected on 71.4 percent (15-21) of their free throws.

Shippensburg had a 45-41 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 22 turnovers and committed 12.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Lock Haven for a 1 p.m. contest.
