Shepherd Women Edge West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa.  –  Freshman  guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort) scored 18 points and junior guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield)  added 17 to lead Shepherd (9-3, 3-3) to a 68-65 win over West Chester  (3-8, 1-5) in PSAC women's basketball action at West Chester on Friday night.

Beeman added a game-high seven assists, while McLaughlin added six rebounds and a game-high six steals.

Junior forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) posted her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Leah Johnson scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Golden Rams. Sascha Marvel added 16 points and six rebounds, while Rebecca Margolis tied Beeman with a game-high seven assists.

West Chester had a 34-30 lead at the half.

There were 26 lead changes and eight ties in the game. Shepherd took the lead for good at 59-58 on a layup by Beeman with 6:04 left in the game. The Rams closed the game on a 9-7 run to seal the victory. Clayton had five points and graduate student forward Anna Ross (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaker Heights/WV State) added four to fuel the run.

Shepherd shot 42.9 percent (27-63) from the floor with a 21.1 percent effort (4-19) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 58.8 percent (10-17) of their free throws.

West Chester hit on 43.1 percent (22-51) from the floor with a 50 percent effort (0-18) from three-point range for the game. The Golden Rams connected on 80 percent (12-15) of their free throws.

Shepherd had a 38-29 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 23 turnovers and committed 19.

The Rams return to action on Monday when they travel to Bloomsburg for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
