CALIFORNIA, Pa. – DJ Hahn scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead 15th-ranked California University of Pennsylvania (12-2, 6-2) to a 66-60 win over Shepherd (10-4, 4-4) in PSAC women's basketball action at California on Wednesday night.
Junior forward
Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) and junior guard
Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) each scored a game-high 21 points to pace the Rams. Clayton also hauled down a game-high 12 rebounds to record her sixth double-double of the year.
Freshman guard
Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort) added 13 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high eight assists.
Bianca Jasper and Monica Burns each added 13 points for the Vulcans. Jasper added six assists and five boards.
Cal had a 29-24 lead at the half.
The Vulcans led by as many as 11 points in the third period, but Shepherd cut the lead and trailed by only six points heading into the final period. Shepherd cut the lead to only three points at 57-53 after a layup by Clayton with 7:41 to play but would get no closer.
Shepherd shot 42.6 percent (23-54) from the floor with a 37.5 percent effort (6-16) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 72.7 percent (8-11) of their free throws.
California hit on 37.9 percent (25-66) from the floor with a 25 percent effort (6-24) from three-point range for the game. The Vulcans connected on 90 percent (10-11) of their free throws.
Cal had a 39-34 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 16 turnovers and committed 18.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Lock Haven for a 1 p.m. contest.
