Shepherd Baseball Splits Pair at Virginia State

ETTRICK, Va. – Shepherd University split a pair of games in baseball action at Virginia State on Saturday. Virginia State (4-5) posted a 5-3 win over Shepherd University in the early game and Shepherd (2-6) bounced back with an 11-1 win over Lincoln University (0-2) in a later game.Game details in the later game will be available on Sunday.

Shepherd took a 5-0 lead in the first inning against Lincoln. Sophomore catcher Andrew Edwards (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) smacked a three-run double to key the scoring.

After Lincoln scored a run in the second, Shepherd answered back with a run in the fifth as redshirt-sophomore third baseman Damond Nixon (Archbishop Curley/Florence-Darlington Tech) reached on a walk and scored on a single by jun ior outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic).

Shepherd took a 7-1 lead in the sixth as junior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) doubled and scored on a double off the bat of senior outfielder Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC).

The Rams added four runs in the eighth to complete the scoring. Nixon's two-run double highlighted the rally.

Keer went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams.

Sophomore pitcher Cole Dunn (Middletown, Del./Middletown/Radford) (8.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 11 K, 6 BB) (1-0) picked up the win for the Rams. Rolando Alvarez (4.0 IP, 1 H, 5 ER 7 K, 7 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Lions.

Virginia State took a 1-0 in the first inning in the earlier game on an RBI-single by Joshua Tayman

Shepherd tied the game in the third on a solo blast by Stewart.

The Trojans answered back in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs behind an RBI-single by Darius Holeman and an RBI-double by Delmarcus Talley.

Virginia State took a 4-1 lead with a run in the fourth. Carl Granderson doubled and later scored on a double by Kevin Russell.

The Ram plated two runs in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3. Stewart walked and junior third baseman Joey Goldsmith (Vienna, Va./James Madison, Pitt CC) followed with a single. Stewart scored on a single by senior designated hitter Joe Burack (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline)  and Goldsmith later scored on a single by sophomore catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland).

Virginia State added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI-single by Jordan McKenzie.

Stewart went 3-for-4 to pace the Rams.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they face Virginia State for a 3:30 p.m. contest
